Paying debts will not remove negative information immediately

Dear Max,

If you pay every thing off will they take it off your credit report?

- KMM

Dear KMM,

Paying debts you owe will not cause the negative information to be removed from your credit report immediately. However, the negative information will eventually be removed.

Negative information, including late payments and collection accounts, are deleted seven years from the date the original account first became delinquent. This date is called the original delinquency date. Paying the debts you owe will not change the original delinquency date or cause the information to be deleted sooner.

The accounts will be updated to show that they are paid. Although the accounts will not be deleted, paying the debt can help you restore your creditworthiness faster. As a result you may qualify for credit sooner than you would if you did not repay the debt.

Thanks for asking.
